Watercolor painting brings a unique challenge when it comes to capturing animals in their natural beauty. Whether it’s a horse galloping across a field or a cat lounging lazily, each animal presents its own set of intricacies. Below are some of the best tips for painting animals in watercolor that can help you bring your subjects to life with movement, energy, and vivid color.
Utilize Photographs for Accuracy
While nothing beats sketching animals directly in their natural habitats, it's often impractical to have such close access. As an alternative, many artists turn to photographs. These images serve as valuable resources for understanding animal anatomy and capturing their movement. By studying photographs, artists can learn to see and interpret the shapes of animals—whether they’re horses, goats, or cats—without the need for expert knowledge of each species.
Pay Attention to Shadows
Just like any other subject, animals are defined by the way light hits their bodies. Understanding light and shadow is key to giving animals their dimensional form. Break the animal's body into planes—top, front, left, right, and bottom—and observe which planes catch the light and which fall into shadow. In watercolor, quick brushstrokes are essential to softening shadows and adding realism. By painting quickly and adjusting shadow edges before the paint dries, you can bring an animal to life with depth and subtlety.
Create Movement with Lost and Found Edges
To avoid the stiff appearance of a frozen animal, incorporate the technique of lost and found edges. This method uses contrasting sharp and soft edges to give the illusion of movement. For instance, the outer edges of the animal might be softly blurred, making them merge with the background. By matching the background's value to the subject’s, the viewer’s eye perceives these ambiguous edges as part of the overall movement.
Simplify the Background to Highlight the Animal
The background plays an important role in the animal’s portrayal. Often, unnecessary details in the background can distract from the animal itself. By adjusting the background’s color and value, you can either camouflage the animal’s edges or make them stand out. If you want to camouflage the edges, match the background’s value with that of the animal. If you want to highlight a specific area, create contrast with the background. For example, using complementary colors like a green background for a rooster’s red comb will make the red appear more vibrant and draw attention to the rooster’s head.
Exaggerate Colors for Personality
Adding vibrant and exaggerated colors can inject energy into your watercolor animal paintings. Bold color choices help to emphasize mood and personality. For instance, a chicken’s playful nature might come through with bright, lively colors, or a goat’s quirky personality might be accentuated by bold color shifts. This approach adds excitement to the painting and helps the animal subject stand out, making it feel more dynamic and alive.
