How To Properly Clean Your Kitchen
Even the most thorough home cleaners can overlook certain spots, and in the kitchen, some areas are commonly neglected. One such place is the kitchen sink. Many assume it’s clean because it’s exposed to running water and soap multiple times a day, but in reality, the sink can harbor significant amounts of bacteria from food particles and dish residue. Even when you do remember to clean the sink, there’s another part that often gets missed: the faucet head.

Cleaning the faucet head can be tricky, especially if it hasn’t been addressed in a while. However, there are effective methods to get it spotless—and once you establish a routine, maintenance becomes much easier.
Deep Cleaning with White Vinegar
For a thorough clean, white vinegar is your best ally. It works well to dissolve lime, calcium, and hard water deposits. Mix equal parts of vinegar and water. If the faucet head can be removed, submerge it in a bowl of the solution. If it can’t be removed, fill a plastic bag with the vinegar-water mix, place it over the faucet head, and secure it with a rubber band. Let it soak for about an hour, then run water through the faucet to rinse it thoroughly.
Tip: Some faucet materials may react poorly to vinegar. If this is your first time trying this method, limit the exposure to just a few minutes. For delicate finishes, soak for only 30 minutes. If there are still stubborn deposits after soaking, gently scrub with an old toothbrush.
Alternative Cleaning Methods
If vinegar isn’t suitable for your faucet, you can use steam. A handheld steamer with a soft brush or a gentle sponge can help remove buildup safely.
When Your Faucet Needs Extra Attention
A faucet head requires a deep clean if the water stream is uneven or slow, if you notice lime or hard water deposits, or if black slime appears (oxidized manganese). While small amounts of manganese in tap water are generally harmless, buildup on the faucet head can contaminate drinking water or clean dishes, posing potential health concerns.
For a more thorough maintenance step, unscrew the faucet aerator and remove any buildup with a toothpick. Once these issues are addressed, regular upkeep will prevent recurrence. Wiping the faucet head with a rag after each use and performing a monthly clean with mild soap and a soft brush can keep it in top condition without extensive effort.
