Saucer magnolia (Magnolia × soulangeana) is one of the most eye-catching magnolias and is sometimes called the tulip tree because of its large cup-shaped flowers. In spring, its bare branches become covered with oversized blossoms in shades ranging from white and soft pink to deep magenta.

These fragrant flowers open dramatically before falling away, creating a spectacular seasonal display. The cultivar ‘Rustica Rubra’ begins with dark rose-colored buds that unfold into large white flowers, creating an attractive two-tone effect.

Saucer magnolia usually develops a rounded shape, growing nearly as wide as it is tall, with mature trees often reaching about 25 feet in both height and width.

Magnolia ‘Galaxy’: A Reliable Hybrid Choice

The hybrid Magnolia ‘Galaxy’ offers large, richly colored flowers in deep reddish-purple shades. Unlike many large-flowering magnolias, its blossoms appear two to three weeks later, which can help reduce the risk of damage from unexpected spring frosts.

Its upright, narrow growth habit makes it especially useful for smaller gardens. Another advantage of this cultivar is that it begins flowering at a relatively young age.

Magnolia ‘Elizabeth’: A Unique Yellow-Blooming Variety

Most magnolias are known for pink, rose, or white flowers, but Magnolia ‘Elizabeth’ provides a different look with its elegant pale yellow blossoms.

The primrose-colored flowers typically appear from late April to early May. They carry a gentle musky fragrance and gradually fade into a warm creamy shade, adding a soft and refined appearance to the spring garden.

Visiting Magnolia Collections in Washington

For those wanting to experience a wide variety of magnolias, the University of Washington Botanic Gardens offers one of the most impressive collections in western North America.

Most of the magnolia specimens are located in Washington Park Arboretum, with additional examples around the Center for Urban Horticulture. Many mature trees in the collection are between 50 and 70 years old, including several larger species that are rarely seen in typical gardens.

The Best Time to See Magnolias in Bloom

According to garden experts, mid to late March is an excellent period to view many Asian magnolia species. Areas such as Rhododendron Glen and Loderi Valley provide especially beautiful displays, where large flowers appear on bare branches before many other trees have begun producing leaves.

The most impressive flowering period usually occurs from early to mid-April. When magnolias begin appearing in gardens and landscapes throughout the city, it is a sign that the arboretum is approaching peak bloom.
