In eighteen sixty eight a pharmacist built molds using iron wires mounted on wooden blocks. He dipped these wire pins into a gelatin solution to form trainable shells. By using slightly different pin diameters for the cap and body he enabled the two pieces to telescope tightly into each other. Industrial production of empty gelatin shells began by eighteen seventy four. He also created the standard numerical sizing system that ranges from double zero for the largest down to size five for the smallest.
The Rise of Automated Manufacturing
Automatic filling machines created a massive surge in global capsule demand during the nineteen twenties. Machinery designs evolved rapidly over the following decade. In nineteen thirty one automated equipment was developed to manufacture both capsule caps and bodies at the same time. The machine joined the two matching parts together into a hard shell.
