What GPT-6 Actually Is
GPT-6 became the default model for paid ChatGPT users in September 2026, and on October 7 OpenAI expanded access to all users while adding Intelligent UI — a feature that generates interactive interfaces within conversations rather than just text. This is the most significant change to how ChatGPT communicates since its launch.
The rollout split users by plan: Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise received GPT-6 Sol starting October 7. Free and Go users received GPT-6 Luna — a smaller variant — on October 8. The two variants are not the same model, which matters for anyone using ChatGPT across plan tiers.
What Intelligent UI Actually Does
Intelligent UI generates interactive elements within ChatGPT responses — charts, calculators, forms, interactive diagrams, and clickable buttons — tailored to what each question needs. Rather than returning a block of text that you then manually act on, ChatGPT can now return something you can interact with directly.
OpenAI’s examples: ask about a road trip and get an interactive map with clickable stops; ask about a recipe and get a timer alongside ingredient quantities; ask for a bill splitter and get a working calculator; ask how a mechanical object works and get a labeled interactive diagram. The interface adapts to the question rather than defaulting to text every time.
A critical design choice: Intelligent UI is meant to be optional. Users can ask for fewer visuals, and the system is designed to choose whether text, visuals, or interactive elements best fit each specific question. Not every response generates a card or chart.
How GPT-6 Performs Differently
Beyond the interface changes, GPT-6 Sol is designed to begin responding while it continues to reason — adding information in stages rather than waiting to produce a complete answer. OpenAI reports that GPT-6 Instant starts answering web search questions 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant, based on internal evaluations.
For complex multi-step tasks, GPT-6 shows better coherence across longer conversations. The model maintains instruction hierarchy more reliably, meaning Custom GPTs and complex prompts are less likely to drift mid-conversation.
What Has Not Changed
Intelligent UI applies only to the Chat tab. Work and Codex tabs are unaffected — enterprise workflows and coding scenarios have not changed in this release. Users who primarily use ChatGPT for coding or structured work tasks should not expect differences in those environments.
The shopping features released October 1 — virtual try-on powered by ChatGPT Images 2.5 and the Favorites library — remain available and separate from the Intelligent UI rollout.
Who Benefits Most
Users who ask ChatGPT to plan, compare, calculate, or visualize information will see the most immediate benefit. The interactive elements eliminate the copy-paste-step-manually workflow that was previously required for anything beyond simple text responses.
For Custom GPTs, Intelligent UI means a well-configured GPT can now generate charts, calculators, and interactive outputs tailored to its specific purpose rather than being limited to text responses. This is a meaningful upgrade for Custom GPTs used in planning, analysis, and decision-support scenarios.
