Cats, also known as domestic cats, are small meat-eating animals that have lived with humans for thousands of years. Their scientific name is Felis catus, and they are part of the feline family, which also includes lions, tigers, and leopards.

A Brief Look at Cats

Cats have been companions to people for about 10,000 years. Some live in homes as pets, while others live on farms where they help by catching mice. Cats that live outside without owners are called feral cats.

There are around 60 types of domestic cats, including ones with short hair, long hair, or no hair at all. When a cat doesn’t belong to a specific breed, it’s often called a domestic shorthair (DSH) or domestic longhair (DLH).

Where Cats Came From

Cats were first kept as pets in ancient times, especially in Egypt. They were respected for their ability to catch mice and rats. People even believed cats were sacred and often honored them with mummification.

The earliest known pet cat was found on the island of Cyprus, dating back to around 7500 BC.

Cat Bodies

Cats are built to move quietly and smoothly. Their bones are flexible, which helps them twist and squeeze through small spaces. Unlike people, a cat’s front legs are not attached by bone to the rest of their skeleton, making them more flexible.

Cats have excellent night vision, large eyes, and sensitive hearing. Their whiskers are touch-sensitive and help them feel their way around, especially in the dark. Most cats have five claws on their front feet and four on the back. These claws can be pulled in or out as needed.

How Cats Walk

Kitten Facts

A cat is pregnant for about two months (around 66 days). She usually gives birth to 3 to 5 kittens. Kittens start eating solid food at about 6 to 7 weeks. Female cats can start having kittens as early as 5 months old, and they may have two or three litters per year.

Cats usually give birth without help. They find a quiet, safe place and take care of their kittens on their own. Kittens should stay indoors until they are about 2 to 3 months old.

Keeping Clean

Cats are very clean animals. They use their rough tongues to clean their fur. This grooming helps remove dirt and loose hair. Sometimes, cats cough up hairballs—this is normal. Brushing a cat helps prevent too many hairballs.

What Cats Eat

Cats need a diet that includes mostly meat. Most pet cats eat cat food from cans or bags. There are special foods made for kittens, older cats, or cats with health needs. Cats should not eat dog food every day. Dog food doesn't have enough nutrients that cats need, like taurine, which helps their eyes.

Staying Healthy

Cats should visit the vet regularly for checkups and vaccines. These help protect them from serious illnesses. Cats that go outside can get fleas, which are small biting bugs. Flea collars or medicine from a vet can help.

Some indoor cats may gain too much weight if they don’t get enough exercise. Playing with toys can keep them active and healthy.

Adopting a cat from a shelter or vet clinic is a great way to give a cat a loving home. These cats are usually checked for health problems and often spayed or neutered (so they can’t have kittens).

How Long Do Cats Live?

Cats today live much longer than they used to. In the 1980s, cats lived about 7 years on average. Now, many cats live 13 years or more, and some even reach their 30s! The oldest known cat lived to be 38 years old.

Some think black cats bring bad luck, while others believe they bring good luck.
