Top Family-Friendly SUVs

When I first began reviewing vehicles, I made a case to my editor at my previous workplace: I wanted to evaluate every car from a family perspective. Many manufacturers advertise their SUVs as family-ready, but that doesn’t always match reality once you actually install car seats and load up kids.

At the time, my daughters were both in rear-facing seats. Later, one transitioned to forward-facing while the other stayed rear-facing, which gave me a constantly evolving real-world test setup. It became a practical way to judge how usable each vehicle truly was.

Since starting this journey, I’ve tested 42 different vehicles—more than 30 of them just in 2025 alone. That included sedans, SUVs, EVs, plug-in hybrids, pickup trucks, and even minivans, all with my kids and husband riding along. Through that experience, I quickly learned which cars genuinely work for families and which fall short.

Below are eight vehicles I personally found most impressive and would confidently recommend to parents looking for safety, space, versatility, and enjoyable driving dynamics.

1. Hyundai IONIQ 9 Calligraphy Design — A Spacious Electric Family Cruiser

Although the U.S. doesn’t yet have a true electric minivan, the Hyundai IONIQ 9 comes very close in spirit. It delivers strong practicality without feeling bulky or unrefined.

Inside, it offers generous space for passengers and luggage, along with a long list of family-friendly features. The ride is smooth and relaxing in normal driving modes, while Sport mode unleashes its full power for those moments when you want more performance.

Some standout features include a sliding center console, integrated sunshades, user-friendly digital controls, premium audio, a panoramic roof, and a third row that is actually usable for adults. Even taller passengers have decent headroom and legroom in the back.

There are USB-C ports and cupholders throughout the cabin, and cargo space remains usable even with all seats in place.

The only drawback is price. My test model exceeded $76,000 due to optional finishes and upgrades. However, considering its estimated range of around 300+ miles and strong efficiency, especially for home charging users, the overall value is strong.

2. Subaru Ascent — Practical, but Best Without Heavy Third-Row Use

The Subaru Ascent stood out for its affordability, safety reputation, comfortable ride, and standard all-wheel drive. For a family with young children, it worked very well in daily use.

It offers good visibility, rear climate control, sunshades, a large glass roof, and easy access for installing child seats. The second row can slide and tilt, allowing access to the third row even with car seats installed.

However, the third row is quite limited in space. It is acceptable for short trips or emergency use, but not suitable for long journeys, especially for adults or older kids.

Cargo capacity is strong when the third row is folded. It can handle large strollers, grocery runs, and everyday family gear with ease. With all seats up, storage becomes very limited.

Fuel economy is average, around 19 mpg in city driving and about 24 mpg on highways. Still, given its price and feature set, it remains a strong value option.

3. Hyundai IONIQ 5 — Compact but Surprisingly Spacious EV

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 sits in a unique category. Despite its compact exterior, it offers far more interior space than expected, which made a big impression during family use.

It has excellent cargo room for its size, a flexible interior layout, and strong driving range depending on configuration. Different trims offer everything from comfort-focused to performance-oriented setups.

Installing child seats was straightforward thanks to its tall roof and clearly marked anchor points. Interior space in the back is generous, with plenty of legroom for kids.

The sliding center console adds flexibility, and the front trunk provides extra storage for small items. Charging compatibility is also a plus, including support for fast charging networks.

Pricing starts in the mid-$30,000 range and increases with higher trims, making it relatively accessible compared to many EVs. It’s a great option for smaller families or urban living.

4. Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid — Efficient with Strong Everyday Usability

The Santa Fe Hybrid offers a comfortable and practical family layout, especially when used primarily as a two-row SUV with occasional third-row use.

With the third row folded down, cargo space becomes very generous. The second row is well-suited for child seats, with wide doors, adjustable seats, sunshades, and rear climate controls.

Interior design focuses on usability, with multiple storage areas and intuitive technology. Ambient lighting was also a fun feature for kids during nighttime driving.

Fuel efficiency is solid for a vehicle of its size, averaging mid-20s mpg in mixed driving and higher on highways.

Pricing is competitive for the segment, though AWD and higher trims increase the final cost. Overall, it offers a strong balance of comfort, efficiency, and family practicality.

5. Mazda CX-70 PHEV — Premium Feel with Excellent Interior Space

The Mazda CX-70 plug-in hybrid was a pleasant surprise, especially in terms of interior space and refinement.

Without a third row, the rear cargo area is extremely large, and the tall cabin makes loading and organizing items simple. Rear doors open wide, making car seat installation easier than expected.

Interior materials feel upscale, especially in higher trims with premium upholstery. The driving experience is also more modern and refined than expected for a Mazda SUV.

Fuel efficiency is strong, and the plug-in hybrid system can be charged at home using standard outlets, making daily use convenient even without a dedicated charging station.

Pricing is moderate for the segment, especially considering its luxury-like interior feel and efficiency.

6. Subaru Outback Touring XT — Family-Friendly with Real Driving Fun

The Subaru Outback continues to be a top family choice because it balances practicality, comfort, and driving enjoyment.

Child seat installation is simple, and the large windows and sunroof make the cabin feel open for kids. Entry and exit are easy due to its ride height, which also helps adults get in and out comfortably.

Cargo space is generous, and its flexible layout supports everyday family tasks like stroller storage and shopping trips. Roof accessories also expand its carrying ability for travel or outdoor gear.

The turbocharged engine adds real performance, making it enjoyable to drive even when not carrying passengers. It remains one of the most versatile family vehicles available.

7. Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid — The Minivan Alternative in SUV Form

The Grand Highlander Hybrid is a massive three-row SUV designed specifically for family use. It serves as a strong alternative for those who don’t want a minivan.

The third row is usable for longer trips, and cargo space remains practical even when all seats are occupied. Despite its size, it drives more smoothly than expected.

Fuel efficiency is impressive for such a large vehicle, with solid numbers in both city and highway driving. Acceleration is smooth and confident, and braking performance is strong.

Second-row captain’s chairs provide excellent comfort, and overall cabin space is generous for passengers in all rows.

Pricing is relatively reasonable compared to fully loaded competitors and even some minivans, making it a strong family value option.

8. Genesis GV80 3.5T Sport Prestige — Luxury Meets Family Function

The Genesis GV80 combines luxury and practicality in a way that stands out in the segment.

One standout feature is its automated rear sunshades, which can be controlled directly from the driver’s seat. This makes it extremely convenient when traveling with children.

The cabin is extremely comfortable, with premium materials, advanced technology, and excellent seating comfort. Kids benefit from large windows, a panoramic roof, and rear climate controls.

For parents, features like massage seats and performance driving modes add enjoyment during solo driving. The engine delivers strong power, making it feel more dynamic than most luxury SUVs.

All-wheel drive performance is also impressive, handling difficult weather conditions with confidence.

While fuel efficiency is not its strongest point, the GV80 focuses more on comfort, luxury, and driving enjoyment than economy.

Final Thoughts

When comparing these vehicles, I focused on real-world usability: ease of installing child seats, family-friendly features, cargo practicality, pricing, and fuel efficiency. I also considered how enjoyable each vehicle was to drive, because family transportation doesn’t have to feel dull.

Most importantly, my kids experienced every one of these SUVs firsthand—and their comfort and behavior played a big role in my impressions. In the end, if a vehicle works well for children, it usually makes life much easier for parents too.

Since each vehicle was tested over a one-week period, long-term ownership experiences may vary. Still, I’d be very interested to hear how these models perform for families who live with them every day.
